Chimes

In order to get the sound for the 3 clips I recorded one of my old Globes that play nursery rhymes when wound up and left to play. I recorded it on my phone and the quality came out really well and therefore I didn't need to re-record it again. I found that it was very creepy and also when edited it came out really well. I used the software called Audacity in order to change the effects on the music which is an online free piece of software.

Backwards Melody

For the backwards melody I put the song into Audacity and the highlighted the entire piece of music and then picked a effect from the top tool bar that would put the song into reverse. I found the tool and then selected it before listening back to it. It turned out really well and the sound is really distorted without over editing it too much and losing the sounds quality and scariness. I therefore left it with just the reverse as the edit that I did to it and therefore this meant that the sound was constantly pulling itself backwards and it sounds really awkward to listen to back.

Slow Melody

With the slow melody I chose the effect which changed the speed of the piece of music. I pulled the slider to the left and therefore this made the piece of music go much slower. I did like it however it lost the scariness through removing the fastness and therefore I wasn't so keen on how it sounded after listening to it. I didn't do anything else to it as I didn't want to carry on this piece of music as it is too slow for the opening in which we are doing. It also doesn't sound as menacing as the others and therefore I decided to leave it rather than make it even worse.

Fast Melody

This is my favourite one because I really like how speeding up the clip has made it more mysterious and spooky rather than just a normal nursery rhyme which although is quite scary was fast paced enough for the opening which we are putting together. Therefore I really found that by just changing the speed alone made the music much more suitable for the opening and therefore made no other changes to it overall. I did try adding an echo but that made it too over crowded with noise and therefore abandoned that idea as it didn't work out. I also tried bass but as the pitch is too high this was pretty much useless and therefore left that idea. It is much more effective with the simple adding speed to it rather than over doing it with more effects than it actually needs.

      Music Part 2

      Drums Music Part 2

In order to make the Drums better I decided to make the drums go a little bit faster in order to fit the pace of the video for the credits which is really quick and therefore so did the music that played over the top in the background. I also made the bass a bit deeper in order to make it sound darker to the viewer. I feel as though this is a much better version of the one before because this time it conforms much more to what we have actually created within the clip that this piece of music will go with. I put it with a piece of rough earlier footage and then made it go faster and therefore this means that you can see it with a piece of video that will be the actual speed.

I changed the speed of the clip up to around a 100 and therefore this means that the piece of music will play a 100 times faster than it did before. I did try 120 however this distorted the music too much and made it sound silly in playback and therefore I tried a little lower and it sounded much better. In changing the speed it makes it sound much more effective when put with the clips and will work better with the piece of footage which it will be overlaid with making the entire credits look and sound good.

In order to make the drum sound have more bass I changed the pitch of the music and made it of a lower pitch and therefore this made the sound much more deeper than before. I clicked on the bass to make it lower but did move any of the sliders as I didn't want the bass too low otherwise the sound wouldn't be recognisable and would merge into one long piece of bass music without the changing of the beat and tune.

      Flute Music Part 2

I decided to also change this one as I liked it however it didn't sound scary enough and therefore I decided that perhaps making it slower would change the effect that it had on the tune. However I really like the tune as it had that carnival effect of the different pitches and the disorientation that came with it that the flutes created. This meant that I didn't want to do a lot to it as I wanted to maintain the effect which I had but make it more scary for the viewer and fit in with part of the clip later on. I also altered the video that was overlaid with it by making it much slower and therefore this meant that the tune fits in with what could be on in the background however the clip may be a little bit faster.

This is the only effect which I changed with this one because I thought that it would just need to go slower rather than making it too overcomplicated and therefore I just made it slightly slower than taking it to an extreme. I also tried a fade in however that didn't enhance it and therefore I decided to remove it in order to make it better. Overall I feel that by adding this effect it has made the piece of music better because it sounds more haunting and scary rather than being a strange tune put over the top of a video which didn't initially fit it.

I didn't do anything thing to the third tune as I didn't like it at all and found it annoying and therefore I decided not to develop that any further because it wasn't going to be used.

      Evaluation of Filming.

      Filming Evaluation.

This week we went to film the tunnel scenes, using Greenwich Foot tunnel as our location, Here is a evaluation of the day, how it went, and if there were anythings that went wrong, or could have been improved.

      Location: Tunnel
The tunnel was compliant with the requirements in which we wanted, which was the sole purpose of us choosing this tunnel to film in, the only problem we had was whether to include the lift into the shot or not, as we were not sure whether we wanted to show it, as it could have shown a escape route, but we included it, as we thought that even though there was a escape route, what would happen to our protagonist would be inevitable. There was a lot of grime and scratches along the tiles on the wall, in which tied in with the plot, and also shows that more supernatural occurrences may have happened here at some point. Also linked in with this the grime appears to be dripping, and running down the tiles, in which can link in with blood, and also the stains within the walls, linking to our plot completely and also foreshadowing what is to come for the protagonist. Some of the tiles appeared to be missing, which also showed the age of the tunnel, which meant that the supernatural occurrences could have been going on for many years, linking to the horror genre.

(See next three images for tunnel shots on the day).

      Business:
As we went down to the tunnel at around half 10 and started filming, we tried to hit the time in which people would be already at work, and not out for their lunch breaks, although there were many tourists who were using the tunnel, and were quite stunned as they were greeted by a clown halfway through the tunnel, with some even deciding to take pictures, and stare for long periods of time! Each shot that we did had to be timed to make sure that there was no one walking through the tunnel, or anywhere close to our section of the tunnel, to ensure that the tunnel would look completely deserted, fitting in with our plot and genre, as if there were other people within the tunnel it would raise the questions of why would it not happen to them, why did it only happen to our protagonist, and also we can not control someone's reactions if they are not part of our cast, so if they laughed, it would just ruin the mood completely.

Setting Compliant with Costumes & Make up.
The make up and costumes fitted in perfectly with the tunnel setting, and although they looked completely parallel, as you would not expect to see a clown within a tunnel alike this, it looked perfect for our genre, and also scared a few members of the public walking down the tunnel, who defiantly did not expect to see a scary clown in the middle of the tunnel!

      Lighting.

The lighting in the tunnel created a enclosed feel to the tunnel, also creating lots of different shafts of light, varying both from lots of light, to very little parts at all. We could not control the light as it was already there, but we could change the camera angles, to enable us to use the light to our advantage in which we did. Which also as we used the camera in the monochrome setting, allowed there to be darker patches on the CCTV styled shots, which then enabled us to create and set up the supernatural typed horror location we wanted, as it created a division between light and darkness.

Did we get the shots we needed.
We successfully got all of the shots that we needed, and completed all of the tunnel shots, now all we need to do is edit them, and decide if there is any of them that we feel we need to reshoot for any reason. I think the day went successfully, and we got everything done swiftly and efficiently, with a lot of team work, and hard work from everyone involved.

      Home Made Music

       Music Clip 1

For this piece of music which I created I found a  beat on Garage band which had a flute. I was trying to find a Sound which sounded creepy and the flute sounded like the best option. It was in a Latin tune and therefore I needed to edit it in order to make it sound sinister and scary for out film opening. This is my favourite tune that I made because I think that it conforms the most with the  video which we are doing as it sounds carnival like and also quite scary as it isn't something which we would like listening to.

      The piece of music.

      `
For the compressor I decided to change the Ratio and the Attack and this therefore made the tune a little bit slower and also that I wouldn't be as attacking as it was before and therefore this took off the screech that it had after the effects had been added therefore make it less high pitch on the viewers ears.
This is the master echo and Reverb and this gives you the chance to change the echoing of the instrument which I altered slightly in order to make sure that the flute had some echo and turned the reverb right up so that it had a twang to it when it echoed.

This reduces high frequencies however I wanted certain parts on a higher frequency than other but I didn't want the frequency to be extremely high and therefore I turned it down a bit. This meant that it on the really high pitches of the flute it is quite high but on the lower notes its ok. The higher pitch is meant to make it feel awkward for the viewer to listen to.

This is the first of the two phasers which I applied and with this one I turned up the intensity so that the phaser could be heard quite clearly but without being too intense. I slowed down the speed completely so that it was slow however this gave it a poor feedback and therefore made it less effective in the long run. Then the feedback was high and this gave it the sort of guitar type sound and therefore completely changed the sound of the instrument.

This is the second phaser which I added and this time I made the Intensity and the Speed the highest it could possibly be and this would counter act the other one how the feedback was low and therefore it wasn't as prominent as the other one however it did have an effect and the two phasers worked really well together in this piece of music to shape the instrument into something with a much different sound which makes it more scary and sinister.

I turned the bass really far down and therefore it was a more authentic sound and therefore this meant that the sound wasn't swallowed by the bass at all because it wasn't there and therefore it was just the sound playing as this piece of
sound didn't need the bass other wise it wouldn't work as well with the emotion it is trying to get across.

       Music Clip 2

For this piece of music I used a drum instead of a scarier instrument. With this one I decided to make a heart beat type of beat that would go along with an intense scene or something like that and therefore I wanted to create something with bass and a deep sound to it in order to mirror that of a heart beat and also what I have heard in films before. I really like this one as I do feel it does sound like a heart beat however it might need a little bit more editing done to it in order to make it fully effective.
This is the piece of music.

This is the bass amp and I used this is order to make the bass behind the beat that plays. By adding a bass too it I created more depth to the sound and therefore making it sound a little bit more like a heart beat rather than a flatter beat which might not have been so effective in creating something near to a beat. I decided to turn up all the different dials but not the High one because otherwise the beat because more high pitched and unbearable.
For the Master echo and reverb I decided not to put any echo onto this one because when I did it didn't sound very good and it distorted it too much.
I turned down the attack completely but I did turn up the threshold and also the gain which made it more prominent but without it becoming too high pitched and therefore decided not too turn everything up because you completely lost the beat and it became a long screeching beat.
I added no Visual EQ to this music clip.
In order to take away the screech from the beat I decided to turn down the Treble Reduction and therefore this meant that the frequency wasn't as high and therefore the notes where slightly flatter but with more bass behind them.

      Music Clip 3
Again I wanted to create a piece of music which wasn't normal and therefore needed a lot of distortion in order to make it more psychological rather than the drum beat before. I chose trombones this time as again I thought that they were more scarier than the other instruments that Garage Band had on offer. I like this one but at the same time I don't because there is something about the sound which puts me off it and therefore it needs more work if its going to be used in the future.
This is the piece of Music.

With the compressor this time only the ratio is turned completely down low whereas the others are scattered because if the threshold was turned up to high then the sound started to screech and also the attack needed to be turned down because it wasn't as effective with it turned up higher. The Gain is just off centre and therefore this means that it has hardly been touched however it is a little low.

I added a distortion to this piece of music and for this distortion I decided that it would be of a brighter and more happy tone because then it would subvert what was happening on the screen and create a contrast. I turned up the drive slightly to make it go a little bit faster but kept the output level low because otherwise it would be extremely loud.

The Flanger is another form of a distortion and for this one the only one I drastically changed was the intensity and I think it would be this effect that I would need to re-think if we wanted to use it in the future however it may not need to be changed at all.
Again I used the phaser for extra distortion and therefore this time I turned down the Intensity and the Speed but made the Feedback higher and therefore this means that the viewer could hear it.

I added no echo to this track however I did turn up the reverb slightly.

I added no Visual EQ to this track.

Results of the shortlist of names.

      Shortlist of Names Results.

We wanted to see what our target audience thought of our suggestions for names, and also wanted to see if they had any new suggestions on names that we had not thought of which could be a good idea to maybe use for the final name.

Here are the reasons why we picked each name for the shortlist and what we felt about it:

      • White Face: As the clown's make up base is pure white, we felt that this could be the 'name' of the Clown, and how it is known to those who see it/come across it. Also as it is supernatural, having a completely white face is almost connecting with ghostly pale white, which links to our genre, and shows the connection between our antagonist and our supernaturally within the film opening.
      • Zeppelin : We chose Zeppelin as it was another name for balloon, which we felt as we are going to be including balloons that are left as a calling card on our victims, then we could somehow incorporate this into the name, in which we searched for other meanings/names for balloons and came up with this name.
      • Harlequin: We were looking of other names connected with clowns and came up with this one, which is a type of clown, although it did not fit in exactly with the type of clown and costume that we were using, it did correlate to the colours, and was also a clown, which is what our antagonist is, which meant that the title includes all of which the audience need to know.
      • Cirque de la Mort: This translates to Circus of Death, which was thought up as it includes what happens within the plot, it also implies the plot and links to the killer clown, but does not reveal it as it is in a different language. Therefore is subtly conveyed.
      • Smile: We wanted to find some names which summed the film opening up in one word, without giving too much away, so that the audience would want to watch it, and came up with Smile, as it seems like a innocent, and light name, which is contrasted to the plot and all that happens within.
      • Grin: Alike Smile, we wanted to find a name that completely summed up the plot in one word, which Grin does completely, as the antagonist leaves the victims with a clowns grin, but also seems like a light hearted, non horror film, completely contrasting to the plot within our film.

The results percentages are as follows:

The most popular name is Smile, in which I feel personally is a strong name, due to the nature of the clown's smile, and also the fact that he leaves a smile on his victim's after he has killed them. As this was chosen as the most popular, it shows us that our target audience understand the plot and motive of the story and are connecting it with the name in which they feel is the most appropriate.

Although Grin was closely second, with only a few votes behind.
