Final Music Choices

FINAL MUSIC CHOSEN

POV MUSIC 1
We used this music because it sounds disorientating and also confusing because it doesn't have a set tune and therefore it is played in a confusing way. This was done through the music being reversed and then the pitch was slightly made higher and therefore that gave it is strange sound that doesn't sound normal. It fits in really well with the other under laid music that is also played along with the clip and therefore this means that it conforms with what we are trying to show. It is a really good piece of music which was created by Lily using audacity. It was good to reverse it because it distorts it easily and then this means that it doesn't become over edited. It is simplistic yet very effective in the opening scene.

This is the piece of music after we had edited it, it is very distorted, and the range in pitch and speed changes throughout.

The sound is reversed, to give it a sound which is different to what we would usually expect, adding tension to the opening.

The pitch was also altered slightly, to give it a sound that it far from normal.

THE CREDITS MUSIC
I made the bass a bit deeper in order to make it sound darker to the viewer. I feel as though this is a much better version of the one before because this time it conforms much more to what we have actually created within the clip that this piece of music will go with. I put it with a piece of rough earlier footage and then made it go faster and therefore this means that you can see it with a piece of video that will be the actual speed. When put over the top of the credits it really conformed with what was happening within the video and therefore was a really good piece of music in order to include as it was the perfect choice for our titles.

MONTAGE SCENE
We wanted something creepy yet effective and therefore decided to search for a music box clip and then I found this one. We decided to listen to it as a group and then played it over the top and discovered that it fit perfectly with the scene even the beat sometimes matches the actions which are happening within the scene which looks really goof when it is watched back. This is the final piece of music that we chose because we wanted to get the montage scene right and when we found this piece of music we decided to download it straight away as it really fit with the scene in total. It was a really interesting piece of music and it was really good that we decided to use it because it conforms perfectly with the video piece.

STATIC NOISE
We wanted a simple White Noise effect for each piece of static that wasn't to loud and therefore wouldn't distract away from what was going on but would still create jump through it cutting to the static. Therefore we simply found a really simple piece of White Noise and then put it into the video and cut it down to each section so that it would fit.

ANOTHER PIECE OF POV MUSIC
This is the eerie piece of music which was overlaid with the top piece of music and a iMovie effect in order to create the entire music piece. I like how in the video the heavy breathing comes in just as you start to see the clown more prominently and as it starts to get closer to him. You can then tell that it is affecting him in someway although he cannot see it, it is still present near him and this piece of music shows this. Lauren found this piece of music and therefore it shows a group effort in finding the music. We overlaid this after we had found all the music and discovered it fitted completely and therefore we kept them together.

For the breathing soundtrack, the speed had to be changed, as it was too fast paced, and ended too quickly, so we wanted it to slow down, to emphasis the tension within the scene.

The decibel was also changed, as we wanted the sound to be more prominent and louder, as it sounded quite quiet compared to the other music that was paired with this.

Music Editing onto Film

Editing Music

Beginning

This is the beginning part of the music editing in which we have use my own piece of music which is a fast and bass drum which conforms with our opening scene which is also very fast paced. We wanted to keep the music more stark rather than really over layed and too disorientating. I had to drag the clip forward because the music started too late into the credits and therefore this meant that we had to adjust it slightly. I also faded out the end in order to make sure that it didn't fade over into the skyline shot.

POV Shot

With the POV shot we wanted to make the music eerie in order to conform with it being dark and also that the clown appears in random shots throughout. We therefore got the majority of the music from SoundCloud and then edited it on Audacity to speed up and also distort to make them uncomfortable for the viewer. We then over layed them together and discovered that they worked reall well, plus with the Drama Dark Suspense sound from iMovie then then added the small noises to it that were not avalible before. The breathing begins when he walks into the tunnel and therefore you can tell that as the clown gets closer to him it starts to affect him in a particular way and therefore conforms with what is happening even though he cannot see the clown. This therefore conforms with a supernatural genre as before the character comes into contact with the antagonist there is usually eerie or suspenseful music closely followed by the emphasised sound of them breathing over the top in order to show fear or anxiety.

Tunnel

For the CCTV shots we decided to use a more carnival type of music and therefore this means that the death is approaching and the clown is gradually getting closer to him. It also goes with his walking and when the clips cut it smoothly transitions back after static without being too mixed up. The music is interrupted by the sound of the white noise and also the static image which is sudden and breaks the scene up into different segments of filming and also music. We then layered a Heartbeat which came from iMovie and this therefore creates tension because if you can hear someones heartbeat it makes the viewers beat slightly faster making them feel anxious and also perhaps implying that something is going to occur soon. The heartbeat is also cut out by the static and therefore implies that the tape is changing from one to another.

Montage Scene

For the montage scene we decided to get our music from the internet and in particular music box music which is more high pitched and dream like rather than the others. We did think about possibly using a high pitched frequency but instead found that the music box was just as effective. The music fits really well with the film inlcuding when he looks from side to side and the music beats follow in time with it. The static in the beginning is longer and therefore this meant that it showed a change taking place and something bad is going to happen. The music for the montage scene was the most important as it is the most stand out scene and therefore the music had to show this as well rather than diverting on a differnt tangent which would have confused the viewer.

Ending

For the final scene we decided to cut out the music and leave it as just silence along with the interrupting parts of static which cut up the film. By having it as silence at the end it makes it much more sinister and conforms with the fact that he has just died because not only has the music gone but also the heart beat which therefore confirms that the protagonist is dead. I think that the scene works really well without any other sounds because this means that you solely focus on the scene and the fact that he has just been killed rather than over doing it with a lot of music.

Montage Editing

We put the clips in a timeline with the music as it shows the progression of the death. This was simply done by dragging the clips from the saved files and putting them in order. The order was storyboarded beforehand so that we knew how to  get it right.

We decided to edit the clip because we had to make it appear more supernatural. So here, we changed the speed of the montage to 340%. This speed meant that there is more of a surprise factor about the montage because you never know what is coming next as it is going so fast. We also had to change the duration of the clip to make sure that the montage was even quicker.

Changing the audio on the clip was very important because of the non-diegetic sound that we wanted to put over the top. We therefore had to get rid of any diegetic sound that may have come with the clips that we edited together. This was simply done by completely cutting the audio volume on inspector. Inspector allows for any background noise to be diminished which is very important.

Editing the video colour was also important because the exposure etc have to be exactly right in order for the full effect of the images to hit. The high contrast allows for the makeup on the clown to become a lot darker and it also allows for more shadows to appear, making the image scarier to look at.

Adding an effect to the clown image in particular was really simple. We just had to choose the image that we wanted to edit and then choose the effect. After scrolling through all of the different effects, we decided upon Sci Fi as the green tint to the image conforms to the expectations of a supernatural horror film - it implys the presence of a supernatural being.

Obviously, incorporating the actual death scene in the montage was necessary because we wanted the audience to understand what exactly was going on and not confuse them with the montage. This was simply done by dragging from the saved files in our media folder and cutting them down to the appropriate length. We chose not to make them too long as we wanted the focus to be on the other images.

Editing Choices

Shot One- Rolling Credits
Applying a bleach bypass effect
Increased speed up to four times it's original pace

Shot Two- London skyline
Applied bleach bypass effect
Speed increased by half

Shot Three- London Skyline
Speed increased four times
Reduced Motion Distortion
Increased zoom by 7%
Smoothed stability

 Shot Five- London Skyline

Increased zoom by 16%
Smoothed stability
Reduced motion distortion

We wanted to increase the speed at the beginning to shock the audience and set the a fast pace for our opening. We sped up the clip duration to enable us to fit in more shots and we liked the resulting effect. By speeding up the start, the audience have no idea what is going on, which is our intention, as we wanted the audience to be confused and disorientated. By using the tunnel shots, it allowed a smooth movement going through the tunnel and established the location.

When we applied the bleach bypass, we wanted an effect that darkened the tunnel and created a dirtier more sinister horror effect, as it complemented the surroundings and created shadows on the walls, in which would interest the audience to what unusual events are occuring within the tunnel.

When editing the skyline, we decided to stabilise the establishing shot, as we did not want it to jolt. Our intention was for the establishing shot to be a serene shot, in contrast to the tunnel opening it follows. The shot included London lit-up at night and we increased the contrast to enable the audience to be able to establish the buildings in the shot, and connect it with London. The motion distortion was needed to enable the smooth movement, as when it was first shot, it was taken through shaken hands, which post-filming we decided wasn't an effect we felt appropriate for this shot.

3rd Location Visit

On our third location visit we decided to re film the London Skyline because we didn't have a good quality and therefore it needed to be re filmed otherwise it wouldn't be acceptable for the short film. We went a little bit earlier and this meant that we had more light in order to test out different times in order to determine the best time in order to film for us. We arrived near sunset an filmed then but then decided to stay until it was dark and all the lights where turned on.

During the time which we waited for the sun to set we went around the college and looked at other potential places in order to film and although it was a really nice place in terms of lighting and architecture, it was too far away from the tunnels entrance for us to consider it as a place for filming and therefore will keep it in mind for future reference about whether or not if needed it could be reconsidered as another place in order for the victim to come from.

We found coming again to film the skyline extremely useful as we were able to film in different lights and therefore then pick out favourite version of the skyline in order to pick the best one for our film opening. We felt that overall when it is darker it is better as all the lights are on and te reflections of the water are really nice and therefore we are more likely to go with the darker shots rather than the lighter ones due to the effect and also that the other shots are filmed in the dark.

Source of Inspiration - CCTV Footage

Source Of Inspiration -
CCTV FOOTAGE

Weeping Angel On Security Camera

Camera Angle - The camera stays in the exact same place all the way throughout the scene and therefore shows that it is on a tripod and is a wide angled shot in order to show the emptiness of the room and also to shot the entire angel only cutting off the skirt.
Editing- The only editing they use is continuity editing and also Cutaways from the shot of the angel to the shot of the static and then back to the angel giving it time to change its position.

Sound - Is extremely eery and this makes the viewer feel uncomfortable as the angel starts at a social distance but slowly moves closer and this will make the viewer feel tension as when the

angel moves closer to the camera
the music not only increases in
tension but it also increase in volume and pitch which is non diegetic sound. This ends with the sound of the tele turning off (an old tele).

 Mise En Scene

  • I has a black background which then makes the white of the Angel stand out against it.
  • As the angel gets closer to the camera the scene becomes increasingly tighter and therefore this means that it is reducing the space in which people have in order to escape from it.
  • By putting the static between the moving angel shots shows that the angel never moves when you are looking at it and therefore shows that it has a connection with darkness and that you will never see it actually move within the scene.
  • The Angel becomes darker as it gets closer towards the camera and this may show that it is not as angelic and innocent as it was before and that it is now a threat towards the people.
  • By having the TV cut out at the end of the scene it brings in the idea of it being a cliffhanger as you don't know what happened after the camera cut out. Did something bad happen?
  • By having the Angel move every time closer to the camera it is extremely eery as you don't expect it to do that. However by having the first shot of it alone in a room adds the sense that this isn't normal as it is by itself and locked away in a secluded room away from people.
  • By having its arms open it makes it look more vulnerable however as soon as the arms leave the shot it becomes more sinister compared to when you can see the torso and the arms.
  • The static symbolises the power cutting out linking this back to the idea that the darkness is the trigger of movement.
  • The composition is vertical created by the angel however there is the diagonal/curved lines which is created by the wings and that suggests that there is anxiety and something unusual about this particular angel.
  • The time never changes throughout the whole video it always stays on 11 showing that time hasn't moved and that perhaps the number 11 has some sort of significance towards the scene (11:11?)
Why it is a good source of inspiration?
  • Because it has the fear element of being in a secluded room and not being with anyone else which contributes towards our idea of having our scene in a empty room with just one person.
  • By playing with darkness it plays about with one of the greatest fears that people might have also darkness conceals things and therefore adds to the tension as people cannot see what they want to see. It hides important information.
  • The camera is also a really great idea because it means that more that one person can see inside this room however they may not be looking and puts frustration into the viewer because they can see whats going on but the character in the scene cannot.
  • Also by using something innocent like an angel it makes it very sinister by making it something to be scared off as it is coming into the viewer space, into their face making them wanting to hide as it is literally coming towards them

Panic Room - 'Get Out Of My House'

Camera Angle
  • Wide angle shot which then establishes this as a house. By having the men standing together in the middle all dressed in black this shows us that it is not their house and that this may be a break in.
Editing
  • There is little editing in the scene apart from continuity editing and cross cutting between the men standing in what looks like the living room and the mother and daughter who are sitting in the panic room.
Sound
  • The sound in this scene is completely diegetic and for this particular part it is the mother using the PA in order to talk to the men and is telling them to leave and that she has apparently called the police, which they know she has not done.
Mise En Scene
  • The scene is extremely dark which shows that it is at night and that these people are not meant to be there as their identities are shadowed and the way they are dressed does not match the grandeur of the house.
  • They are dressed in black and this therefore signifies them as robbers and the black shows them as a threat to the mother and daughter.
  • In the panic room is it very bright showing the contrast between the men and the mother and daughter. They are very dark where as in the panic room the use of light shows them as innocent and vulnerable.
  • This scene is very vertical which shows the strength of these three men within the scene.
  • The man closest to the camera in the dominant as he is the biggest and is centred in the shot implying that he is the leader of this group.
  • They are all looking up indicating that they are listening to what the woman is saying otherwise they would be looking somewhere else and ignoring her.

Camera Angle
  • Is a wide angled shot in order to fit the CCTV camera video in and also the people in the bottom screen shot. This shows that they are trapped within the scene as both characters are placed at both edges and they are in a very tight framed shot which shows that they have no choice and that they cannot get out of the room.
  • In the top screen shot it shows the man standing in the centre of the shot in the TV and this shows his importance compared to the other shot as he is now the dominant as we focus on his first. He is in a very loose scene even though he is inside the TV and this shows that he has more control of the people in the room as he can get out.
Editing
  • Again only the cross cutting between the Panic Room and the men in the living showing the answers between the two people so although they may not be able to talk to each other properly the audience can hear everything that they are saying.
Sound
  • The sound is again diegetic between the characters as they can hear what each other are saying and so can the audience.
Mise En Scene
  • In the top screen shot they have included the front door in the shot and this therefore shows that the men have the choice to leave however with every shot of the mother and daughter in a door is never present and this shows they have no choice. Giving more control to the intruders and less to the residents.
  • The scene has a green tint to it and this therefore shows consumption and this may not be of the people but instead the house as the house has taken in these intruders and trapped the residents inside a room, where their health could decrease.
  • By having a lot of TV's in the bottom scene this therefore shows that they live in a large house perhaps a mansion and this implies towards the idea of wealth. This could also give us the answer as to why these men have intruded; maybe because of the wealth that this particular family has.
  • The boxes created by the TV's could symbolise the idea of being trapped as it does resemble the idea of a fence and a fence is used in order to enclose.
  • The difference between the top and bottom screen shots is that the man has much more space to move around and this therefore means that he can leave whenever he feels like it. However by having the residents in the room with the CCTV cameras means that they have more of an advantage against the men as they can see their movements and this means that although the men have more space, by trapping them inside the TV screen is restricts their freedom and movements.

Camera Angle
  • Same as the screen shot above which is a wide angle in order to fit the entire TV screen in but to also show that there are other TV's in the room as well.
  • High angle of the man holding the sign in the room which is supposed to make him look more vulnerable but this is subverted because they are the more vulnerable ones locked in the room whereas he can escape if he wanted to. Also with the use of the vertical lines it adds the idea that he has more strength than they do.
Editing
  • Cross Cutting which has been used throughout the whole scene
Sound
  • This is again diegetic sound of the mother talking to her daughter as discussing the meaning of the sign which the man is holding. There is a series of signs which are shown after this one which angers the mother.
Mise en Scene
  • The man is dressed in all black showing him as the threat towards the mother and her daughter.
  • He is placed in the middle of the scene and therefore this makes him the dominant. Also by having him holding up the sign it shows that he is taking charge although he may be the smallest out of the three people in that room with him.
  • He is looking directly into the camera making not only a connection with the residents but also with the audience.
  • The message is written on white paper with black ink which makes it easier for the viewer to read as not only does it stand out from the darker background of the house it also means that we don't lose the message; as if it was written on darker paper it would be difficult to see.
  • The house seems to be very stark perhaps implying that they have only just moved into the house and therefore they where not expecting these men to break in so soon.
  • The scene is extremely dark showing that perhaps the threat that these men are making is all throughout the house as even the mother is dressed in the black as well.
  • The other man is looking away and even blends in with the back ground showing that he us of no importance in this scene and that focus should be mainly on the man holding the sign.
  • Low Key lighting as it is extremely dark and now harsh shadows are being cast.
  • Deep depth of field with shows the entire scene in which they are in and this means that the audience can see into the house and take in all the information.
  • He is at a public distance and therefore this shows that the mother and daughter have no connection with him at all and that he is a stranger in their house. All of the men are strangers.
Why this is a good source of inspiration?
  • The darkness that overpowers the scene shows that this threat is very strong threat against the mother and daughters life.
  • The multiple cameras shows that they could be in a lot of places and this could be used in horror in order to shows someone or somethings this movements around a building. Or combined with the Angel scene to show something moving closer to the camera in order to scare people.
  • The writing on the piece of paper could be used as a source of trying to get help as they cannot communicate directly with each other which is a clever device in order to use.
  • It is a CCTV camera in a building.
