Entire Script Put Together

Question 1

After viewing a range of different movies in the Horror sub- genre of Supernatural (see few deconstructions) we created a list of Pros and Cons for creating a supernatural horror ( See Pro's and Cons Page).  Our media product conforms and subverts the conventions of a Supernatural horror in many ways:
  • In horror movies alone: there is usually a death in the first scene, which we have conformed to in our media product, to immerse the audience into the opening, and clearly state the genre.
  • The death is not shown in full, which is common in Supernatural movies, as we didn't want to include a gore element, which is present in other sub genres.
  • The costume and make up conformed to that of a supernatural film, due to the alienation of the antagonist, which allowed the audience to pick up on the genre.
  • The location of our media product was chosen (see blog post about location) due to it conforming to the location of a horror, as it was empty and deserted, with a idea of the protagonist feeling trapped within the location, with no way of escape, helped by the parallel lines within the tunnel, that will never meet, indicating he will never meet his way of escape.
  • In supernatural films that I have seen, the victims are mostly picked at random, and have no connection to the supernatural entity, which I thought was a propitious decision, to conform to the conventions of a supernatural horror, but also to show that the threat is imminent and could happen to anyone.
  • Although as it was in modern reality and in a place where people could ordinarily walk through, this showed our subversion, as it was not in a deserted location and was in the center of a city, making the threat seem more realistic.
  • Our main subversion was the characters, and the way that they are presented, as usually in supernatural horror's the antagonist is a young child who has been tortured, and has returned for revenge, but within ours we used a clown, which is usually shown as a joyous character, with a female actress, to subvert the expectations that the antagonist is always a strong male, or a young child, as we thought it would be more effective to our targeted audience.
  • The protagonist was also subverted as we had one protagonist, who was a male, who was killed by the supernatural entity, which subverts the expectation of the male protagonist who is strong and always saves the females, as this appeared to be the same in quite a lot of supernatural horror movies that I had watched.
Question 2
  • Gender was the main focus in terms of area of representation within our piece as we chose to have a female antagonist and a male victim to subvert audience expectations of victim and killer.(MALE PROTAG BLOG POST)
  • To emphasize this gender division, we chose in terms of costume that although the clown should be heavily made up and in costume, she would wear her hair down and long to feminize the threat. (COSTUME POST)
  • We also chose to have our costume entirely covering our antagonist's body as not to sexualize her and confuse any specific stereotypical gender identity.
  • However, we also chose to select our victim as a teenager, partly due to the availability and ease to find an actor but mainly due the fact that the age relates to our target audience increasing the fear factor.
  • In terms of the CCTV filming, the clown is shot during the murder facing the audience allowing a more fearsome reaction due to the clown challenging the camera as it comes closer between shots, again subverting female expectations as it shows her strength and confidence as opposed to the expected weakness and vulnerability.
  • The power of the female in comparison to male is also again emphasized within the shots and editing used for the montage sequence as whenever shot together after the killing, the victim is on the floor whereas the clown is upstanding, structuring the power balance with her in control as an unexpected threat. This diminishes any barrier as a weaker female expected to be seen as a possibly caring and nurturing gender as no emotion is displayed apart from the sinister smile on her face throughout.

Question 3:
  • When choosing our production company, I researched a number of various companies and finally chose to produce ours as a Ghost House Pictures project. (FILM PRODO BLOG POST)
  • Ghost House Pictures have produced widely popular horror films targeted at teenagers and young adult horror fans such as the Possession and The Grudge.
  • Originally, I had difficulty making a decision between using Ghost House or another company largely dealing in Horror, Twisted pictures.
  • Although their main focus is primarily of our sub-genre, their plots often include possession which although I researched into it as a possibility, we chose not to use. (POSSESSION BLOG POST) Not including this feature within our plot therefore makes the Ghost House Company not entirely suitable.
  • Other companies researched have previously deal with high successful supernatural projects, such as Hammer (Woman in Black) and Twisted Pictures (Dead Silence) but do not have a distinctive direction towards the sub-genre
  • . I resulted in making my decision due to Ghost House's suitability as an experienced producer of the supernatural horror genre and their superiority in comparison to the other options researched.

Question 4+5

After we finished editing the film opening, we decided that the appropriate age rating would be a 12 because the violence is there but not dwelled upon. This means that our audience would be teenagers from 13+
The ways in which we attracted and addressed the audience are as follows;
Firstly, when we were deciding upon important decisions, for example the name of the film, we created surveys on survey monkey that other’s could fill out. (Show survey blog post) We promoted the links ourselves, asking friends and younger family members to complete them for us. This would have helped to attract the right audience because all of the people that we asked to complete the survey were within the age for our target audience. We received a lot of feedback, which we took into consideration. This would have helped to attract the audience because the people that filled out the survey would have been eager to see what the finished product looked like and whether their suggestions had been taken into consideration.
We decided that the protagonist should be around the age of 16 so that the audience feels that they are more able to connect with the actor, attracting the audience because they would feel as if the film is of a level that they will be able to understand and relate to.
Part of the film opening was set in a college so the audience would be able to relate to the surroundings and all of the events that come with it.
This links to the location that we chose. (show location blog post) By using the tunnel in Greenwich, we are bringing the storyline into an area that many people would be familiar with. This would attract the audience because the area around the tunnel is where a lot of teenagers spend their weekends. So they would be attracted to the film by wanting to see what we have done in terms of the storyline.
Finally, we decided to use a clown as the antagonist. (Show clown blog post) When researching, I found that clowns are a phobia that is mostly found in children aged 4-16. This, obviously, fits into our age group. By playing on a fear that the target audience have would attract them because they would be anxious to find out how scary our film opening is. This can also be linked to the extreme close up shot of the clown after the death of the protagonist.

Question 6

In terms of how we have developed in our use of technology, we have learnt a lot about different aspects not only of filming but also of the editing process, plus music creation. When filming we came across a few problems and therefore before fully setting into filming we decided to practice a few times before we set about doing it properly. We decided to make filming equipment such as using a household broom in order to get the camera into the top of the tunnel and therefore get the right angle into filming. (CCTV Footage Blog Post) We wanted to use a high angle in filming in the tunnel in order to conform with the conventions of CCTV cameras which usually films at higher angles in order to capture a wide area. We attached the camera to the broom through using the gorilla pod, which proved extremely useful in keeping the camera steady also when we were filming outside as well. In terms of filming in the dark we had to research the camera because it wasn’t picking up on any detail for example when we where filming the skyline of London.(Blog Post 3rd Location Visit) Therefore through researching the technology of the camera we discovered that there was an IA button which dealt with the problem as it would manually set the camera to the correct setting of filming in the dark. We wanted to film at a POV shot for the outside scenes as we wanted to see the journey from the protagonists point of view before it jump cuts to static. The point of using the POV shot is to put the audience in his shoes before taking them out of them and removing them from the death scene. Finally for the montage scene we used a series of different shots from close ups, to high angles, to extreme close ups, panning and wide angles. We have learnt a lot about using iMovie in the editing process from when we first used it in our Prelim.(Lily's Editing Blog Post) We have used a lot more of the transitional devices and also the editing techniques which you can use on the clip itself such as speeding the clip up or down, the effects, removing sound and adjusting the stabilization. This is most prominent in the montage scene where we cut the shots extremely short (mainly under a second) and then integrated short parts of the neck breaking throughout to show it as a death scene. We added the SCI-FI effect to each shot apart from the last as the colour green connotes the ideas of consumption and illness. The last shot has the clowns face half dark indicating that the protagonists eyes are closing and therefore death has struck.(Montage Scene Editing) The montage scene has a lot of the iMovie effects added to it through each having the sound removed and sped up along with a suitable effect attached in order to conform with the genre we have.  Through the editing process we where able to put in our terminology and therefore include a lot of jump cuts and cross cutting in order to make it flow but with a twist. Linear narrative and continuity editing run throughout as all events are carried out in the correct time and order.(Editing Sound to Film Post) Through editing we wanted to bring the element of fear and therefore paired it with the sound which was collected from different sources such as YouTube, own made and Sound Cloud which was then edited on a piece of software called Audacity. We spread the job of music out amongst each other in order to get more mixed views on what each part should sound like.(Final Music Choices Post) For example at the beginning we wanted more fast, paced and bass like music and therefore went for the drums however at the end we opted for a more silent atmosphere in order to emphasize on the death scene rather than have musical distractions. All Diegetic sound has been eradicated from the scenes because of the location sound being inadequate and therefore we decided that Non diegetic sound would have more of a effect. Each piece of editing which we did was consulted among all of us and therefore this meant that we all had a say in what we where doing in the entire process. Our knowledge of the technology has definitely improved by miles and therefore this means that by the end we felt much more confident in what we were doing and what parts of the editing software we wanted to use in order to create the correct effect.

Question 7

Chloe: Looking back at our prelim we have improved a lot in terms of planning, filming and consideration into our editing. One example of how we moved forward was through the initial design of the Storyboard. We have put in a lot more detail and terminology so that for each shot, which we filmed, it meant we knew what we were doing and how we were going to achieve it. By including more detail this meant that we went into filming feeling much more confidant when approaching the filming dates. We including shot by shot action of what was going to happen and therefore this meant that the planning was much more intricate and helpful.

Lily: Again another element which we really improved on was the planning of what location we where going to use and what we where going to use in terms of props and costumes. For the location we decided to look a many different diverse areas such as Tunnel. Basement and a derelict area but finally settled on the tunnel due to the practicality. This shows that we have improved because for the Prelim we only had the use of the school facilities and therefore had to act quickly in order to find somewhere appropriate. This is also shown again in props and costume because for the Prelim we only had the choice of school uniform and any bags or props in which we could find in the short period of time. Whereas for the Film opening we could research different costumes and find the right one which was much more elaborate. We also had the balloons, which conformed appropriately to what we were doing due to the colour connotations and plot context.

Becky: Music also has been extremely improved on since our Prelim. For the Prelim we used the simple sounds, which come with the package of iMovie, and therefore we were not that creative in what we where doing because of the short time space we had; however the music still conformed and the heartbeat has been used in our film opening as well. For our film opening on the other hand I made original music and also of us took turns in order to edits and manipulate music showing that we stepped out of the box in order to create more along with the help of iMovie sounds as well.

Lauren: Lastly we improved in the area of planning who would be suitable for our film opening in looking at who would be more appropriate in terms of age and gender. For our prelim we had to choose from who was available within the school at really short notice and it did work. However when planning for our film opening we wanted to have a female antagonist and a male protagonist to therefore subvert conventions and therefore this meant that again with the others a lot more planning and consideration was taken into the planning due to the amount of time which we had in order to bring the entire film opening together.

Question 1: Script.

After viewing a range of different movies in the Horror  sub- genre of Supernatural (*see few deconstructions, Paranormal Activity & Supernatural*) we created a list of Pros and Cons for creating a supernatural horror ( *See Pro's and Cons Page*).  Our media product conforms and subverts the conventions of a Supernatural horror in many ways:

  • In horror movies alone: there is usually a death in the first scene, which we have conformed to in our media product, to immerse the audience into the opening, and clearly state the genre.

Film Certificate.

Film Certificate.

From looking at the regulations of the film certificate and the different categories, we have decided that out film fits into the 12/12A Section, rather than a 15. Below is the explanation to how we have reached this decision.

The Regulations for a 15 film are: ( Taken from the BBFC Official Website)

  • strong violence
  • frequent strong language (eg 'f***').
  • portrayals of sexual activity
  • strong verbal references to sex
  • sexual nudity
  • brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
  • discriminatory language or behaviour
  • drug taking

After looking at this list of Regulations, that are included in a 15 film, I looked back and watched our film opening, to which we have none of the above Criteria, as our violence scene is broken up showing very little of the actual death scene, we have no dialogue so there is no room for swearing and no sexual references or drug taking. So our film can defiantly not be rated a  15.

So after deciding against 15 completely, I looked up the requirements for a 12A/12. Which I felt would fit the film opening a lot more than a 15.

The requirements for a 12 Film are: ( Taken from the BBFC Official Website)

  • Violence is present, but is not shown in detail or dwelled upon.
  • Moderate physical and psychological threat.

  • Action sequences and weapons may be present, but should not be glamorised.
These were the most relevant points from the 12 rating that I think we completely comply with. The violence in our clip is present, but there is no clear detail or gore shown, which shows we meet the first criteria point, and we have also not dwelled upon this as it moves swiftly on, and only focuses on certain clips of violence for around 2 seconds, so the audience do not have time to pick up on the detail of the violence. There is a moderate physical and psychological threat, but it is not too frequent, and constant throughout the trailer.  As for the action sequences and weapons, we have included a few weapons within our montage sequence, but they are not glamorised, and are infrequent, and not dwelled upon, showing that we have stuck to the guidelines of a 12 rating, and we are not advertising weaponry to a 12 year old audience.

Chosen Name.

Chosen Name

Our chosen name for our film opening is Smile. We have chosen this as we feel that it sums up the contents of the film opening in one word, and is catchy and easy to remember. It is also a contrast and opposite, with the meaning taken in a different way, as it sounds light and happy, which is the complete opposite of what is included within our film opening. It also relates to the clown element which we want to include within the name. So all in all, we feel that Smile is the name that represents our film opening the best, and was also the name which had the highest amounts of votes from our target audience.

Evaluation of Filming.

Filming Evaluation.

This week we went to film the tunnel scenes, using Greenwich Foot tunnel as our location, Here is a evaluation of the day, how it went, and if there were anythings that went wrong, or could have been improved.

Location: Tunnel
The tunnel was compliant with the requirements in which we wanted, which was the sole purpose of us choosing this tunnel to film in, the only problem we had was whether to include the lift into the shot or not, as we were not sure whether we wanted to show it, as it could have shown a escape route, but we included it, as we thought that even though there was a escape route, what would happen to our protagonist would be inevitable. There was a lot of grime and scratches along the tiles on the wall, in which tied in with the plot, and also shows that more supernatural occurrences may have happened here at some point. Also linked in with this the grime appears to be dripping, and running down the tiles, in which can link in with blood, and also the stains within the walls, linking to our plot completely and also foreshadowing what is to come for the protagonist. Some of the tiles appeared to be missing, which also showed the age of the tunnel, which meant that the supernatural occurrences could have been going on for many years, linking to the horror genre.

(See next three images for tunnel shots on the day).

Business:
As we went down to the tunnel at around half 10 and started filming, we tried to hit the time in which people would be already at work, and not out for their lunch breaks, although there were many tourists who were using the tunnel, and were quite stunned as they were greeted by a clown halfway through the tunnel, with some even deciding to take pictures, and stare for long periods of time! Each shot that we did had to be timed to make sure that there was no one walking through the tunnel, or anywhere close to our section of the tunnel, to ensure that the tunnel would look completely deserted, fitting in with our plot and genre, as if there were other people within the tunnel it would raise the questions of why would it not happen to them, why did it only happen to our protagonist, and also we can not control someone's reactions if they are not part of our cast, so if they laughed, it would just ruin the mood completely.

Setting Compliant with Costumes & Make up.
The make up and costumes fitted in perfectly with the tunnel setting, and although they looked completely parallel, as you would not expect to see a clown within a tunnel alike this, it looked perfect for our genre, and also scared a few members of the public walking down the tunnel, who defiantly did not expect to see a scary clown in the middle of the tunnel!

Lighting.

The lighting in the tunnel created a enclosed feel to the tunnel, also creating lots of different shafts of light, varying both from lots of light, to very little parts at all. We could not control the light as it was already there, but we could change the camera angles, to enable us to use the light to our advantage in which we did. Which also as we used the camera in the monochrome setting, allowed there to be darker patches on the CCTV styled shots, which then enabled us to create and set up the supernatural typed horror location we wanted, as it created a division between light and darkness.

Did we get the shots we needed.
We successfully got all of the shots that we needed, and completed all of the tunnel shots, now all we need to do is edit them, and decide if there is any of them that we feel we need to reshoot for any reason. I think the day went successfully, and we got everything done swiftly and efficiently, with a lot of team work, and hard work from everyone involved.

Results of the shortlist of names.

Shortlist of Names Results.

We wanted to see what our target audience thought of our suggestions for names, and also wanted to see if they had any new suggestions on names that we had not thought of which could be a good idea to maybe use for the final name.

Here are the reasons why we picked each name for the shortlist and what we felt about it:

  • White Face: As the clown's make up base is pure white, we felt that this could be the 'name' of the Clown, and how it is known to those who see it/come across it. Also as it is supernatural, having a completely white face is almost connecting with ghostly pale white, which links to our genre, and shows the connection between our antagonist and our supernaturally within the film opening.
  • Zeppelin : We chose Zeppelin as it was another name for balloon, which we felt as we are going to be including balloons that are left as a calling card on our victims, then we could somehow incorporate this into the name, in which we searched for other meanings/names for balloons and came up with this name.
  • Harlequin: We were looking of other names connected with clowns and came up with this one, which is a type of clown, although it did not fit in exactly with the type of clown and costume that we were using, it did correlate to the colours, and was also a clown, which is what our antagonist is, which meant that the title includes all of which the audience need to know.
  • Cirque de la Mort: This translates to Circus of Death, which was thought up as it includes what happens within the plot, it also implies the plot and links to the killer clown, but does not reveal it as it is in a different language. Therefore is subtly conveyed.
  • Smile: We wanted to find some names which summed the film opening up in one word, without giving too much away, so that the audience would want to watch it, and came up with Smile, as it seems like a innocent, and light name, which is contrasted to the plot and all that happens within.
  • Grin: Alike Smile, we wanted to find a name that completely summed up the plot in one word, which Grin does completely, as the antagonist leaves the victims with a clowns grin, but also seems like a light hearted, non horror film, completely contrasting to the plot within our film.

The results percentages are as follows:

The most popular name is Smile, in which I feel personally is a strong name, due to the nature of the clown's smile, and also the fact that he leaves a smile on his victim's after he has killed them. As this was chosen as the most popular, it shows us that our target audience understand the plot and motive of the story and are connecting it with the name in which they feel is the most appropriate.

Although Grin was closely second, with only a few votes behind.

Editing for a second time.

More Editing.

After the first editing session, we all decided that it there were still a few more clips left over that we could include within our film opening first sequence before the credits. We had a few clips in which were left over from the filming, in which included disorientating shots, that could foreshadow what is to come within our film opening. By selecting the piece of the clip in which I wanted to be included in the original opening,  I selected the clip, and split it, so that i would be able to source the piece that was needed for the opening. I then placed this back onto the dashboard,to enable it to be considered part of the film opening, and played it various times to make sure that it fitted in with rest of the film opening in which had already been editing and looked consistent with the rest of the footage.  Although I liked the consistency with the rest of the clips, i felt that it needed to have a smoother transition, and needed to fade to black to enable the consistency to continue.

As there is a lot of darkness in our clip, with the monochrome setting, I decided it would look better if it fades to black at the end, to enable the smooth transition at the end to continue on to the next clip. By clicking on the transitions, and then searching through to find fade to black, i then chose this to work together with the clip that I was editing to make sure that it would fade in, and also fade out, which would make it consistent with the rest of the clip, and would not look completely different from the rest of the clip, it would also mean that altogether the clip would run smoothly with nothing drawing paticular attention from the audience's perspective.

As the clip that was introduced was not as steady as the rest of the film opening, i had to run a stabilisation analysis, to determine how stabilised the rest of the film opening is, and which will then compare this to the clip that i am about to introduce. This took around 5 minutes, but the analysis was finally complete, and I then applied this to the clip to stabilise the clip, to continue the consistency onto the next of the clips which will be included within the opening.

There were many things in which I changed about the clip, to make sure that I got the best out of the set materials that I wanted. The source clip for this particular extract was only 4 seconds long, as the film opening is only 2 minutes and I did not want to bore the audience or drag the clip out for more than which was intended. I did not think that any video effects or audio effects needed to be added, but i did take out any of the sound effects, as I was not sure if a voice over needed to be included. The speed was kept the same, but i stabilised the clip using the smooth clip motion, as mentioned in the above analysis of the print screen. The maximum zoom was just allowing how strong and close up the zoom would be, in which i though would be necessary to obtain the detail within the location.

Deconstruction - Trapped ( A Level Film Opening.)

Deconstruction - Trapped.

This week I have chosen to deconstruct another A Level piece in which was filmed at the same location that we are going to be setting ours at. I have chosen to deconstruct this piece, as it will give us some ideas on the lighting, how another group have incorperated the location into their own film opening and how it will be percieved on camera. It also gives us a chance to look at the Mise En Scene of the tunnel, to see how effective the underlying design is, and how clear the features stand out on camera - defining how seeable the wall texture in the tunnel is. Although this was filmed 2 years ago, I still feel that it is relevant to our filming, as we can see how other people have adapted and used the enviroment to their own benifits and strengths.

Camera Angles/ Shot.

  • There was not a wide range of camera angles, within this piece of filming, just mainly full body shots, establishing the tunnel location around them, and establishing the stalker into the scene.
  • I liked the use of the close up shot on the face, which to me demonstrated to the audience that the girl was trapped within this tunnel, and that she was still yet unaware of what is going on, it also to me felt like a type of CCTV that you would see within a reality TV show such as big brother, as she is clearly being watched, but has no idea that the camera is this close to her, or that she is even being watched.
  • By following her walking down the alley with the camera, a tracking is being used, through the point of view of the stalker, which I feel is quite a good concept, as we get to see exactly through their perspective.
  • There was no a variety of different camera angles used, which made the scene opening quite repetitive, and in my view quite boring, as we already knew what was coming up, which is the reason why I would have liked to have seen quite a few more camera angles included as the opening was quite basic.
  • I felt that the tracking of the subject was quite good, as it paned from right to left to reveal the protagonist running down the tunnel a countless amount of times, but due to it being over used, in the end it became boring and predictable.

Mise En Scene

  • The tunnel linked in with the title, as she was trapped, with the underlying designs also indicating that she was trapped within, by the use of the parallel walls, which would usually create a sense of security, these created a sense of confinement, showing that she really was trapped, with not a lot in which she could do to stop/escape from it.
  • The editing in of the antagonist was good, and showed that he was a figure of the imagination, that he was not from this world and was not real, but when it was repeated many times.
  • The use of the red sign on the wall within the shot connotes the danger in which the protagonist is in , although it was placed in the tunnel already, I feel that it was a smart decision including it into the camera shot, as it is the only thing that stands out in colour within the whole piece.

Lighting
  • The lighting in the tunnel is artificial, which adds to the suspense of the filming. It is also reflects off of the side of the wall, in which darkens the edges of the tunnel, which creates a perfect lighting scheme for this location.
  • A dark circle is shown at the top of the tunnel, in which could be foreshadowing her being followed, and also builds effect and tension within the scene.
  • There is no way of altering the tunnel lights, as they are one set brightness, and are connected to the electricity mains. This means the only way of altering the lighting would be to use additional lights, which were not used in this film opening, which could have been quite useful, as they could show the harsh reality of what is happening to the protagonist.

Sound.

  • I really like the sound at the start of this film opening, as it is what you would expect within the tunnel, but with the sound of silence echoing around the tunnel, and being maximised, it creates tension within the audience, as we are expecting something/someone to jump out from within the tunnel as this is in the horror genre.
  • With the use of a little irregular beat put in, which sounds alike a scale in which would be used at a part of tension in a unexpected occurrence in a horror movie, I feel this sound works incredibly well for the genre and the piece.
  • The sharp, almost screeching sound at the end, is used to make the audience jolt/jump, in which it did successfully the first time for me, but I do not feel it was effective enough to fully startle a audience on a large scale.

General Comments.

  • I did not think that the acting was strong enough, especialy at the end, as you could tell that the girl was not scared at all, and did not react enough to what had just happened. She would not have been that calm. Also when running through the tunnel and the facial close ups, she did not look as scared as I would have expected from a protagonist within a film opening.
  • There were elements that I did like, such as the editing, and a few of the camera angles, but they were over used, which took away the effect in which was the sole reason they were created, which then dampened the effect at the next time.

Budget

Filming Budget

Taking all of the filming into consideration, we decided that there was a variety of different things in which we needed to buy in order to make our film opening high quality and look realistic, in which was our end goal. As we are not a media company, or had no sponsors, our budget was completely off our own backs and own pockets. As there are 4 of us, it was easy for us to be able to all put our money together and divide the cost, in which meant we were able to buy high quality props for our piece.

The variety of things that are included within the budget for each character are;

Clown (Antagonist):

  • Clown Costume: We had trouble with the clown costume as our main problem was whether to buy the costume ourselves or to hire one from a costume shop. The main issue was the timescale in which we would be using it, and also the condition as we wanted our clown to be covered in 'blood' which we would be unable to do to a costume from a fancy dress shop, as when it would be returned it would be deemed unusable, and we would have to pay extra prices to get it dry cleaned. In the end the cost of hiring a costume for a week was £15 to £20, meaning if we wanted to hire in the holidays it would be costing us £30 to £40 . Therefore we decided on buying a costume in which we all agreed on or £20 which meant £5 between us all. We also wanted to buy large shoes for the clown as we felt this would add to the costume, but as we wanted this shoes to be distressed we decided upon buying a cheap pair of shoes from a charity store, in which we could completely alter to our standards to fit in with the character. For this our budget was at maximum £5, in which was highly reasonable and acceptable.

  • Balloons: as we have decided to use a assortment of colour within our film opening through the use of balloons, this also had to be incorporated into our budget as we needed to buy in bulk, to enable if any of the balloons popped during the process, and just how many we would need. Also as we have chosen to use helium and string this will be at a extra cost, in which has been incorporated and will all in all cost £20.00 with a helium tank, in which we could find cheaper at later dates if need be. This would mean a £5 cost per person in the group.

  •  Contact lenses: We were unsure on buying contact lenses, as we felt that the clown make up would be enough, but we still wanted to have a look to see if there was reason to be included. The lowest price of contacts ranged from £10 - £15 which would add to our budget in which was not necessary. Although the contacts that we looked at would have been good to compliment the face paint and the costume as they were blood red, we felt that the purchase would just have been too much and would have made the costume look over the top.

  • Make up: The face paint is all of the make up in which we need, which is being provided by Lily, as she already owned some, but we also brought extra which was £6. We chose faint paint as we felt that it would be better than a mask and look more realistic. This was include within our budget as we included all of the face paint and the brushes. It was a necessary purchase to further our costume choice, to make the clown look real, and scarier to the audience . The main colours in which we purchased complimented our horror theme; red, black, white. In which all connote darkness, death, danger and blankness, in which is the effect we wanted to create.

Protagonist

  • Costume: the costume for the antagonist is as of yet non existent, as it is their own personal preference into which they want to wear. They have a basic checklist on which is a blank unbranded t shirt as we are unable to add branding into the clip, and a pair of jeans. This make our protagonist blend into the surroundings and make him not any different to any of those who are usually in horror movies. It also raises questions as to why he is the target, and why the clown has chosen him.

  • Wounds: the wounds in which we are going to be using on the protagonist will be made via wax and fake blood. In which comes to the cost of £6 all in all. This is a essential piece of makeup in which is needed to make our wounds look realistic and fit in with the genre.

Running total so far:
With contacts and Helium tank
£62 divided by 4 - £15.50 per person.

Without contacts and helium tank
£32 divided by 4 - £8 per person.

Evaluation of the test filming.

Evaluation of the filming

In the winter holidays we decided that it would be a good idea to start our filming for our trailer. We decided to start off with a test shot, to enable us to check the location, the quality of the camera, the business of the location and also the lighting of our location.

Location -Tunnel & College

As we have chosen Greenwich footpath tunnel and also the grounds of the Royal Navy collage as part of our location, we chose a early start to enable us to capture the emptiness of the tunnel, and the surrounding locations, in which we completed.
This was the first time I had seen the tunnel, and I feel the location is perfect, as it gives off a ominous mood, and by even being a spectator and walking down the tunnel, the grime on the walls and the darkness puts you on edge and uneasy about the walk down the tunnel. I think that for these reasons when we are shooting the film opening the location will be completely perfect, as it fits in completely with our storyline. By having the naval college in the background, and showing that the walkway is used by a variety of people also gives our story a backing, to show that the protagonist has a reason for walking down this tunnel and choosing to walk this route at this particular moment in time.
As the walk into the tunnel is quite open, but still fenced, this could show that the protagonist is already trapped, and their fate has already been sealed even before they choose to step into the tunnel, the destiny in which is before them has already been chosen and cannot be altered. It also links to the theme of danger and uncertainty, as we already fear for the protagonist. As the walk is quite open, but walking on the paved path, this could reinforced the idea that the date has already been sealed and cannot be altered.

Establishing shot & Surroundings.
Within the tunnel it is quite hard for a location to be established, in which is why we have chosen to include a sequence of establishing London landmarks to set the location up in the minds of the audience, as with just having a walking path and a tunnel, the location could be anywhere and would be unknown to the audience. In this location we are right next to the river Thames, and are also looking onto particular London buildings in which any audience member would establish with London, such as the London eye, the shard etc. I feel that this will work effectively within our film opening, as it gives it more background and the audience a little bit of knowledge into the storyline and the surroundings of the area , in which is subverting expectations as it looks like the usual London surroundings, nothing bad is going to happen.

Quality of Camera.
As we are using a style of CCTV footage as our footage within the tunnel, we wanted to test the camera to see how effective it was in creating this footage, in which I think looks extremely effective, as we used a broom and a clip to enable the camera to stay up high without shaking, it looks incredibly like CCTV, and with the changing into the settings into monochrome, I feel that it creates the desired look that we were going for incredibly well. Also as we are using a photography camera instead of a flip camera, we are able to use HD Filming, of which i think will be effective in showing the CCTV footage in a high quality, and will make the glitches stand out more, which is the effect that we want in order to make our film opening scarier to the desired target audience, as they do not expect there to be blips and glitches, in which we are going to be creating ourselves.

Business of Location.
As we arrived at the tunnel at 8, there seemed to be very little people around, even though it was a week day, in which proved useful for us, as it means that the tunnel will be deserted and empty at the time in which we want to film, which will give a more isolated and alone effect to the protagonist, and give the antagonist a stronger purpose, as if there was a multiple amount of people, then it would take the motive off of the antagonist, as there would be many people, which would show that the people are taking a interest, and are also they are witness's to the murder, which would be a complete other storyline, and also we would not be able to predict how each person would react, and would have to ask permission from each person taking part for our scene to be published online.

Lighting of the tunnel.
The lighting within the tunnel was perfect for our location, as it was not too dark, so we would be able to see what was going on, but it was all artificial light, there was no natural light, in which make the tunnel feel disinclined from the natural world up above, creating a scarier atmosphere, in which we were achieving to make, As you can see on both of our youtube video's.

Narrators - Source of Inspiration

Narratation - Source of Inspiration

For a source of inspiration, I have chosen to look at Narration in films, to see if they are effective, and what type of information is included within the narration. I have chosen to look into narration, as it is not used in this type of genre, so I want to see if we could change the stereotypical introduction to the film, by having someone narrate what is going on, in which will subvert.

Angels Take Manhattan - Doctor Who.

Reading a letter voice over.

Narration is usually used, when actions can not be used to describe what is going on in the character's head, or it is used when someone has been lost, and have left something, such as a letter for another character, the narrative voice over is then used, as one character reads the letter, ( in this example The Doctor) which has been written by the character who is no longer on screen/involved in the  ( in this particular example Amelia Pond). I feel that this narration, is incredibly effective, and is popularly used in many different types of TV dramas and films, to strengthen the sympathetic response from  the audience. By using the narration in this scene, it provokes more empathy with the character of The Doctor, as we are experiencing exactly what he is, but through his eyes. I feel that by having Amelia Pond read this letter instead of The Doctor reading it directly to the audience, it makes the narration even more upsetting, completely provoking a sympathetic reaction.

I feel that we could use this in our film opening if we wanted to provoke a sympathetic reaction, which could be part of the back story, in which could be a flashback, as someone finds a letter telling them to get out of the room , as there is a dangerous spirit/ghoul/creature lurking near. This could then be used in our film opening, to create tension and anticipation, all of which is a convention of supernatural horror movies.

Inception Trailer

Sub thought voice over

In this trailer, a voice over/narrative by Leonardo DiCaprio, is used to convey to the audience the subplot and the background of the film, it is condensed in such a way, that it is a small monologue, in which has been dragged out for the audience's response to it. By using a rhetorical question at the start, we are directly brought into the film as a audience, as the trailer has engaged us and asked us the question, not the other characters within the film. In this trailer, the voice over is a dramatic internal monologue, of what the character is thinking not saying, in which shows his ulterior motives to us as the audience, but not to those who are within the film and are characters. This gives us as an audience a insight into the character, and shows us the deeper more complex internal thoughts, which are not portrayed on the outside.

I think that this type of voice over/narrative could be used within our film opening, maybe from the paranomal entities point of view, in which people will not be expecting, or it could be from the view of the vicim, this could be one of the ways in which we could portray background information to the audience, through a internal monologue of one of the protagonists.

I Am Number Four

Getting Across background information.

With having a voice over to explain the back story of the plot, it saves time for the directors and producers to add in other scenes involving a lot of dialogue for the audience to establish exactly what is happening, and what is going on. By using a voice over, and using a various amount of sub scenes, it links together the small scenes with the dialogue, so that we as an audience are filled with knowledge about the movie, before it has even begun. It gives us a small chance to process what has gone on before the plot in the film has started. I think that by using this monologue, is shows us clearly what has gone on, and without it, we would take longer to realise what the film is about, and what the numbers are all about. It also as an audience engages us into the film, as we feel as if we are directly being addressed by the protagonist, showing the importance between connection between the audience members and the characters within the film.

I think that we could implement this into our film opening, and it could work incredibly well, as it could be a story going back in time, from the person in the present time, giving us the background information into a scary story, or a horror story in which has happened years ago. This could work very well with the genre, but the person in which we used for the voice over would have to have a strong dramatic voice to fit the theme.
